Level 2 Β· Tongue-blocking & the slide

tongue-block single notes, the slide button for sharps/flats

The slide turns the C diatonic layout into a full chromatic instrument; tongue-blocking gives a fuller, steadier tone.

What you learn

  • Tongue-block: cover several holes and leave one open at the corner of the mouth (Ntakas: ‘tongue block’).
  • Press the slide button to raise a note a semitone β€” this is what makes the harmonica chromatic.
  • Play accidentals (C#, F# …) by combining hole + slide.
  • Alternate slide-in / slide-out cleanly within a phrase.
  • Octave playing via tongue-block (two holes apart).

Grounded in: A. Ntakas β€” Harmonica Method β€” for single notes, tongue-block, bending, vibrato, slide, shake, breathing. source

Note: a method-grounded technique curriculum (no score corpus for this instrument); levels are graded skills, not pieces.
