Level 1 Β· Breath & single notes
holding, blow/draw, clean single notes, the C major scale
A relaxed breath and a clean single note are the whole foundation; the natural C scale comes straight from the blow/draw pattern.
What you learn
- Hold the harmonica with low notes (hole 1) to the left; relax the lips over the holes (Smith: ‘position of lips and tongue’).
- Blow and draw β notes are made ‘by blowing out and inhaling the breath through the reeds’ (Ryan’s).
- Produce a clean single note by puckering the lips to one hole.
- Play the C major scale with the slide IN (blow/draw across holes 1β4: blow DO, draw RE β¦).
- Simple melodies on the natural scale.
